Innovation Means Breaking Old Patterns: Why Repeating the Past is Your Biggest Risk

/ /

The biggest risk in business isn’t trying something new. It is endlessly repeating what no longer works.

When we talk about innovation, we often picture cutting-edge technology, radical pivots, or disruptive new business models. But at its core, true innovation is much simpler, and often much harder: it is the act of breaking old patterns.

The Illusion of Innovation

I have sat in countless boardrooms where outdated strategies were presented with a fresh coat of paint. The fundamental assumptions remained the same. The operational framework was untouched. The only thing that was actually “new” was the slide deck theme.

That isn’t innovation; that is just repackaging the past.

Every genuine breakthrough I have witnessed—from the startup hubs of Accra to the boardrooms of Vienna—started with a single, courageous act: someone in the room was willing to stand up and say, “This approach has run its course.”

The Familiarity Trap

Why is it so difficult for organizations to let go of outdated strategies? It comes down to human nature and institutional inertia.

Most systems aren’t defended because they actually work. They are defended because they are familiar.

Familiarity breeds a false sense of security. We convince ourselves that sticking to the known path is the “safe” option, even when the data, the market, and the results clearly show that the path is leading nowhere. Breaking away from that comfort zone requires dismantling the autopilot switch that so many organizations rely on.

Change the Pattern, Change the Outcome

If you want a different result, you cannot rely on the same input. It is a fundamental law of motion and business alike. Change the underlying pattern, and the outcome has absolutely no choice but to follow.

Newton’s Law, applied: I accelerate ventures and institutions—from theory to practice.

Over to you: What is one process, strategy, or system your organization is still running on autopilot? Let me know in the comments below.
